I just found my new FAVORITE condiment. Belizen Hot Pepper Onion Sauce!

Recently I relived our trip to Belize by cooking up some Belizean recipes. Eating the Belizean food took me back to Belize. I felt like I was visiting this amazing country just by sitting at my table and eating the food of Belize.

I made some Belizean Stewed Chicken, Rice and Beans and Stewed Beans. And the perfect condiment to go with them? Belizean Hot Pepper Onion Sauce. 🙂

What Ingredients Do I Need To Make This Sauce?

This condiment is incredibly delicious. Also it is sooooo very simple to make.

The short list of ingredients includes:

  • Onion
  • Scotch bonnet/habanero peppers
  • Cilantro
  • Whole allspice
  • Salt
  • Vinegar
  • Water
Glass bowls filled with water, vinegar, salt, cilantro, half of an onion, 3 Scotch bonnets, and a small dish with allspice seeds
whole allspice

Instructions

This couldn't be easier! Start by mincing the onion and cilantro. Using a small food processor makes this a snap! Then, slice the Scotch bonnets lengthwise.

I have a question. How long does it stay good before going bad? Am I suppose to put the unused portion in the refrigerator? If you mentioned it and I missed it I'm sorry. Thank you

Hi Brandy! Thanks for your questions and hope you are well! Great questions which I had not addressed....yes, please refrigerate the unused portion. From my own experience I have eaten it after a few months of being in the fridge but I recommend consuming it in about a month or so. The flavors intensify after awhile (still so tasty!) but it's not as fresh after so long. I hope this helps! If you did make it would love your feedback if you have time. Thank you so much and I wish you and your family a very Happy New Year! Grace

    Loved it!
I traveled to Belize in college and their hot sauce and also onion/habanero "relish" has always stayed with me. I used the habaneros from my garden and I didn't have the whole allspice so I skipped it. I did add some lime juice. There is a little bit of a hint of a sweetness and I think maybe its bc of the lime juice. Might skip that next time.
Thanks for posting this! be well
