I have an absolute passion for Indian food. I've only scratched the surface with my Indian cooking. However, I'm so happy to delve deeper into Indian cuisine!

Today I made a delicious cool and refreshing Indian salad called Cachumber. Cachumber is, shall we say, the Indian version of the tomato salsa, or Mexican pico de gallo.

Perhaps you have tried Cachumber at your favorite Indian restaurant or enjoyed it before? If not, I highly recommend you give this delicious recipe a try!

What Ingredients Do You Need to Make Cachumber?

Cucumber, chilis, onion, tomato, cilantro, vinegar, cumin, and salt

I have made two versions of this delicious Indian salad. Here I present both versions to show you that we can mix this recipe up a bit to suit our tastes! Both versions are equally delicious!

Version 1:

  • ½ red onion, diced
  • 1 roma tomato - deseeded and diced
  • 2-3 green and/or red chilis (I used Thai chilis and just adjust to your liking)
  • ½ cucumber - deseeded and diced
  • cilantro or coriander - handful, chopped
  • 2 tablespoon vinegar
  • salt to taste
  • 1 ts cumin
tomato, cucumber, chilis, and red onion
Cachumber

Version 2:

  • 1 white onion, diced
  • 1 roma tomato - deseeded and diced
  • 3-4 green chilis (I used Thai chilis and just adjust to your liking)
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • salt to taste
Cachumber

Whichever version you decide to make, you simply combine the ingredients, stir gently, chill for a bit, and voila! Your Cachumber is ready to eat!

How To Serve Cachumber

Cachumber is considered an accompaniment. Some ideas of how to serve Cachumber are:

  • Alongside (or stirred into!) a spicy curry to cool it down!
  • Use as dip as is
  • Stir into yogurt and use as a dip
  • Enjoy on its own!

I can personally vouch for stirring heaping amounts of Cachumber into a Chicken Vindaloo for an oh so delicious meal!

I know you will enjoy whichever version you decide to try!

This recipe for Cachumber is SUPER simple and SUPER delicious!  You can also use lemon juice instead of vinegar for the acid in the Cachumber.  Enjoy as a dip or alongside your favorite curry!  Cheers!
