Now let's get set to make the star of this year's Halloween party....Mummy Crescent Rolls with a delicious Philly Cheesesteak filling!
Instructions
It's super easy to make this fun dish!
Philly Cheesesteak Filling
Heat a skillet on medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Cook the diced onion with a pinch of salt and pepper until browned and caramelized (around 5 minutes) then remove the onions and set them aside.
Turn up the heat to high and add another tablespoon of butter. Add very thinly sliced ribeye steak, sear them, and cook until browned. Add ½ ts salt and ½ ts pepper at this time, stir through, and remove from the heat.
Now combine the cooked steak and onions, and set them aside so we can start working with our crescent roll dough.
Crescent Roll Dough
For this next part I used a nonstick roasting pan. You can also use a nonstick baking sheet, ungreased baking sheet lined with parchment paper, or greased cookie sheet sprayed with a nonstick cooking spray.
Begin by rolling out the sheet of crescent dough on your roasting pan or prepared baking sheet. There are perforations in the dough. Press down on these perforations to seal the seams.
Then, place each slice of cheese on top and in the middle of the dough, overlapping slightly. You will want to leave around 1 inch of dough at the top and the bottom and around 1.5" at the sides.
Using kitchen scissors or a sharp knife, cut into the long side of the crescent roll sheet, making pieces of dough strips approximately 1 inch apart. Leave around ½" of dough between the cut and the cheese.
Lay the cooked steak and onions on top of the cheese. Now start wrapping your mummy by crossing the strips of crescent dough as pictured below. Press down a bit where the strips meet to seal them. Fold over each end and press to seal down.
Whisk 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Then apply egg the wash to the dough with a baster.
Place your mummy in your preheated oven, and bake around 20 minutes or so until the dough is a beautiful and lovely golden brown color.
Make the mummy eyes by inserting small pieces of green onions into the depression of a half black olive.
Insert the eyes into one of the openings at the top, and behold your Mummy Halloween Crescent Roll masterpiece!
Suggestions for Serving
Now comes the best part...eating your Crescent Mummy! This is best enjoyed right after baking it.
I love to serve this with some mayonnaise or mustard on the side. It can be part of a main meal if you are serving 2 or 3 people. Or you can serve a 2-inch slice of the mummy and treat it as a fun appetizer.
I hope that these Halloween mummies will become a family favorite, to look forward to at each year's Halloween party!
