Taos Earthship, Taos, New Mexico

As soon as I saw this Taos Earthship on AirBnb, I knew we had to stay there. To my delight I discovered that it was dog friendly (a MUST as Toby has to have his adventures too!) and affordable! Located in Taos, New Mexico, it is set on a one acre lot that is private, serene, and the views are oh so incredible.

What is an Earthship?

The Earthship concept was pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds. This particular Earthship is a Michael Reynolds Earthship, and was designed by his wife. This AirBnb, hosted by Rex, who is the most accommodating and lovely host, is in a most unique community. The house faces a pyramid (about 3 minutes walk from the house), and the listing states that Michael Reynolds actually received inspiration for the earthships during meditations in the pyramid.

The definition of Earthship as taken from Wikipedia is: "a brand of passive solar earth shelter that is made of both natural and upcycled materials." These structures are meant to minimize the impact on our planet and are meant to be "off the grid" if you like.

It was a great introduction for me to sustainable living. The floors and walls absorb the heat during the day, and then radiate the heat at night so that the evenings are warm and comfy. There are also 3 beautiful Kiva fireplaces that help keep the house warm during the cold Taos winters. Windows can be opened at either end of the house for air flow as well.

This particular earthship is also sunk into the earth, called "earth-sheltering" which helps reduce temperature fluctuations. So cool!

Inside, you'll find dark adobe walls with beautiful designs, and you can see the straw in the walls as well. There are flagstone floors, HUGE sycamore beams, ENORMOUS windows (to look out at an AMAZING sky!), and fun and interesting decor.

Highlights of this Earthship

There are so many fun things to mention about the Earthship, however in addition to the enormous windows I have to say my favorite part was the "greenhouse". I LOVE it and I WANT one like this one day! There were beautiful plants in the planter by the enormous windows, thriving due to the sunlight pouring in.

This Earthship has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom (with an awesome 2 shower head shower!). There is a kitchen where you can cook up amazing dinners, the wifi was great, and if you bring your doggie, you will be treated to lots of space to walk your pooch..watch out for the ENORMOUS rabbits which you may be treated to see! 🙂

We loved staying here. The experience was unique and affordable, and Taos is beautiful and has so many amazing experiences just waiting for you.
