In a nutshell, here's what makes this knife standout from other Santoku knives:

  • Featherlight Precision: Weighing only 136g (0.3 lb), this knife is incredibly easy to maneuver. It’s a game-changer for home cooks with smaller hands or anyone looking for effortless, fatigue-free food prep.
  • Versatile "Three Virtues" Blade: A true multipurpose tool that effortlessly replaces your traditional chef’s knife, utility knife, and carver. It handles everything from delicate tomatoes to thin-sliced lamb roasts with razor-sharp ease.
  • Handcrafted Artistry: Forged in the historic blade-making city of Sakai, Japan, it features a stunning layered Damascus blade. The handle is a unique Yakiurushi (flame-charred) wood handle that is both beautiful and water-resistant.

Best For: Hobby cooks, gift-seekers, and anyone looking for a high-performance "forever knife" that marries form and function.

A good kitchen knife is arguably the most important piece of kitchenware that both professional chefs and home cooks need in their kitchens.

However, many of us own and struggle with knives that are difficult and cumbersome to use. They may not be aesthetically pleasing and therefore lay hidden in your kitchen drawer.

So, if you've yearned for a knife that perfectly marries form and function, then let me introduce you to The Zaku Yakiurushi Damascus Santoku knife.

This handcrafted Japanese knife is meant to be the centerpiece of your kitchen.  With its gorgeous wood handle and a 180mm blade forged from layered Damascus steel, this isn't just a knife. It’s a precision instrument designed to bring joy to your everyday cooking adventures in your own kitchen.

Japanese kitchen knives, which are incredibly sharp, extremely durable, and absolutely beautiful, set the standard.

The Zaku Yakiurushi Damascus Santoku Knife is the perfect knife for your everyday cooking needs and a great investment in your cooking!

Zaku Santoku Knife - A Multipurpose Knife

Premium Japanese kitchen knife with wooden handle, ideal for cooking and culinary preparation.
High-quality Zaku Japanese santoku knife with a wooden handle, perfect for cooking, slicing, and culinary tasks.

If you are like me, I prefer to have one multipurpose knife, rather than several knives, that I can use for slicing different foods.  So a good quality Japanese Santoku knife fits the bill!

Santoku means "three virtues" or "three uses."  Santoku knives are named for their ability to make easy work of slicing, dicing, and mincing. They are also ideal for cutting meat, fish, and vegetables with ease.

The Zaku Yakiurushi Damascus Santoku knife has a razor-sharp edge, with a shorter and straighter blade ideal for precise chopping and slicing.

Visually Stunning - Beautiful Art Of Handcrafted Japanese Knives

As mentioned earlier, this sharp knife will be the showpiece of your kitchen, and is truly a work of art!

The knife characteristics that standout are the gorgeous Yakiurushi handle, and the incredible layers of Damascus steel on the blade.

The stunning wood based handle design looks as if it has been flame charred.  In fact Yakiurushi is a combination of the words "yaki" which means "cooked over direct heat", and "urushi," which is a type of lacquer.  In addition to the artistry of this technique, it also makes the handle resistant to water.

And the blade is even more stunning, with its layers and ripples of Damascus steel.  The blade material is Molybdenum Vanadium Steel, and the blade features watery and wavy patterns with a hammered finish from hammering many layers of steel.

This all purpose knife is truly a work of art and I love looking at it!

This Knife Is Easy To Use!

I find this knife incredibly easy to use, and have become best friends with it!

The wood handle fits comfortably in my hand. At 136g (about 0.3 lb), the knife is incredibly light and enables you to slice meat, fish, and vegetables with precise cuts.

I started using this knife right after I had an injury which affected my hands, shoulder and arm. And I can't tell you how happy I was to have such a light knife that helped me prep food effortlessly during this time!

It's great for smaller hands, and perfect for daily home use as well as for beginner or hobby cooks.

The razor-sharp blades on these knives glide through your food with ease, and are truly a joy to use!

It effortlessly slices through tomatoes and onions, and I was able to cut super thin slices of my lamb roast and ahi tuna.

You'll love using this Zaku Santoku Knife in your everyday cooking!

History Of Japanese Tradition and Japanese Craftsmanship

Sakai City, in the Osaka Prefecture in Japan, has been the heart of where Japanese blades have been made for over 700 years.

Today, that same dedication lives on in the Zaku Yakiurushi Damascus Santoku Knife, which is handcrafted and manufactured by skilled artisans in Sakai.

The Japanese company Zaku partners with skilled artisans who are dedicated to traditional techniques.  It feels great to be able to use this Zaku Santoku Knife, with a quality which comes from generations of skill and expertise.

Care and Maintenance For This Knife

Zaku will send you information on how to care for and maintain your knife.

In a nutshell, you'll want to hand wash your knife and dry it with a soft cloth after each use.

They also recommend using a whetstone to sharpen the knife's edge every one or two months.

Proper care of your knife will enable you to enjoy the use of your knife for a very long time!

Price Point For This Distinctive Knife

At the time of this writing, the price for the Zaku Yakiurushi Santoku Knife is $289.00.

The price for this quality Japanese cooking knife, with its unique features, is a great value for an investment in a kitchen item that you will enjoy using every day.

When you consider that this Santoku knife is a multipurpose knife, you can use this one precision instrument in place of a traditional Western chef's knife, utility knife, and a slicing or carving knife for boneless proteins (like my lamb roast).

Where To Buy This Knife
