#1, I used a ready made spice mix from Asian Home Gourmet: Spice Paste for Singapore Hainanese Chicken Rice.

What Is Hainanese Chicken Rice?

Hainanese Chicken Rice is considered one of the national dishes of Singapore! It is a dish that consists of seasoned rice and poached chicken. This dish originally came from Chinese immigrants from the Hainan province in China. It is based on a Hainanese dish called Wenchang Chicken.

I read from Wikipedia that in Singapore, working class immigrants made this out of necessity to try to stretch the chicken that they had and make it as flavorful as possible. They did an awesome job because Hainanese Chicken Rice is now one of the most popular dishes in Singapore! This is served daily in hawker stalls and restaurants. in Singapore. Now let us enjoy this amazing dish here in the US!

Cooking Hainanese Chicken Rice in the Rice Cooker

I got this recipe from the back of the Asian Home Gourmet Spice Packet that I bought. Dubious? Yes! But I tried it and it worked!

This dish couldn't be simpler to cook up in the rice cooker! I have a small rice cooker, and I followed the "Using Rice Cooker" instructions from the packet. All you simply do is combine rice, water, and the contents of the spice packet in your rice cooker. Then place boneless chicken thighs on top of the mixture, cover your rice cooker, and set it to cook. Once it has finished cooking, leave it to stand for around 5 minutes. That's it! Ready to serve with some garnishes!

By the way, the ingredients of the spice paste are: lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallot, soybean oil, and salt. You MUST take time to inhale the delicious aroma coming from your rice cooker. So GOOD!

If you've never cooked chicken in a rice cooker before, I urge you to try it! It's a lot of fun and so easy to do. 🙂

How To Serve Hainanese Chicken Rice

To serve Hainanese Chicken Rice, simply garnish with some sliced cucumber and tomatoes. My favorite accompaniments are hot chili oil and soy sauce to taste. I am including links for the Asian Home Gourmet Hainanese Chicken Rice Spice Paste, chili oil, and soy sauce for convenience if you would like to order from Amazon. 🙂

You can also cook this meal without a rice cooker. You will just need to use a saucepan instead. 🙂 Either way, this Hainanese Chicken Rice is so delicious and a perfect easy largely hand's off dinner!

I have also tried a Hainanese Sauce by Lee Brand and it was awesome! You may be able to find this in your local Asian Market. Click here for some options on Amazon as well.
