Roast chicken is one of my favorite foods, and I'm sure many people will agree. It's delicious, easy to make, versatile and super budget friendly to boot.
My husband picked up this 5 lb bird at Trader Joe's the other day, and I tried out a new seasoning (Asian style) for the chicken which turned out absolutely fantastic.
I love Chinese cuisine, so making this chicken featuring Chinese 5 Spice was a great idea!
This Chinese chicken is the perfect solution to "What's for dinner tonight?" 😊
Why You Will Love This Recipe
You will absolutely love this recipe because:
- This Chinese 5-spice chicken is a great recipe that uses simple ingredients.
- It uses a blend of spices called Chinese 5 spice, which is a highly aromatic spice with a complex flavor profile
- If you are searching for new chicken dinner ideas, then this is a great option to try something a little different to your normal chicken recipe routine
- It's super easy! The basting sauce for the chicken is almost effortless to make and you will have to baste the chicken during the cooking process but that's pretty much it!
Ingredients You Will Need For This 5-Spice Chicken Recipe
The ingredients you will need for this five-spice chicken are:
- Whole chicken for roasting
- Olive oil
- Chinese 5-spice
- Honey
- Soy Sauce (can sub low sodium soy sauce)
You should be able to find all of these ingredients at your local grocery store.
Only 5 ingredients are needed to make this roast chicken, which may become one of your favorite chicken recipes!
So now let me tell you how easy this chicken dish is to make!
Easy Recipe Instructions
Begin by removing the chicken from your fridge and allow it to sit at room temperature for around 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375F.
Pat your chicken dry, and rub it all over with the olive oil.
Combine the honey, 5 spice, and soy sauce in a small bowl and whisk well. Baste your chicken with this honey, 5 spice, and soy sauce mix. Cover all areas of the outside, and also rub some into the cavity of the chicken. You could also add some of the sauce to the chicken under the chicken skin for extra flavor.
Once the oven is heated to 375F, place your basted chicken in the oven using a roasting pan with a rack. This is hands on BUT you want to check it every 15 minutes or so. Every 15 minutes during the approximately 2 hour cooking time, remove the chicken, baste, turn it over carefully, and baste the other side. The easiest way to turn the chicken is with 2 sets of tongs if you have them.
Repeat these steps throughout the entire cooking process. If you find that the chicken is browning or burning, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil toward the end of cooking.
You will cook the chicken until the internal temperature reaches around 165F. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh, not touching bone, until the meat thermometer reads 165F. At 375F this should between 1.5-2 hrs for a 5 pound chicken but may vary according to your particular oven that you use.
Once the internal temperature reaches 165F, let the chicken rest for around 10 minutes. Carve and then enjoy!
Enjoy This Delicious and Easy Dinner!
The result of my efforts? Succulent, beautifully colored and delicious roast chicken.
You will have drippings after the chicken is roasted. I usually collect the drippings and pour some of the delicious sauce over the chicken when I serve it.
I recommend garnishing the chicken with sliced spring onion and serving with jasmine rice or white rice for a very comforting and awesome meal.
The intoxicating aroma is still around in my house today, as is leftover chicken, which won't last long. Toby my St. Bernard will make sure of that. 😅
I hope you will give this recipe a try! Chinese 5 Spice Roast Chicken just may become your next favorite way to make roast chicken. 😊
What Is Chinese 5-Spice Made Of?
By the way, do you know what makes up Chinese five-spice powder? This delicious spice blend is a mixture of star anise, cloves, cinnamon, fennel, and black pepper.
Be sure to take time to appreciate its intoxicating and unique scent. It's definitely one of my favorite Asian spices!
